"Bouquet" by Veronica Holmes

Veronica Holmes is a self taught artist, born in Kingston Jamaica, (Trenchtown to be exact). She lived in Kingston until age six, then moved from Montego Bay to St. Mary where she attend St. Mary's High School then migrated to the USA as a teenager.

She has been interested in art as long as she could remember. As a child growing up in Jamaica, rainy days were her favorite, that meant grabbing her pencil with paper, it's drawing time; her "man picking breadfruit" was "classic". She tells the story of her mother giving her a comic book, with the “draw deer” image on the back of it, Veronica completed the drawing but her mother thought she had traced it. She sat and watched Veronica redo the image and was very impressed. Veronica’s mother nurtured her talent and was her biggest supporter.

Veronica has had no formal training, she entered the 11th grade at Kolbe Cathedral High School in Bridgeport, Ct the year she migrated to the USA, there her art teacher saw her talent, presented her work in school art shows and encouraged her at length to attend art school to pursue a career.

Veronica took a different path in life and later on she attended Northern Essex Community College, in Haverhill, MA to combine her artistic skills to explore and learn Graphic Design.

When asked about her talent, Veronica’s response will always be, “it is God given, and I just feel very comfortable with a brush in hand or with a pencil expressing an idea.”

Her inspiriation and influences are memories of the island, the lifestyle, culture, religion and people. In all of Veronica's art there is a story being told, many of them personal. She likes to spend time observing the things of nature, people and their various expressions.

Beyond the brush and pencil, she also has a great love for photography, and travels often with a camera, "it is exciting to capture expression or images that is frozen for ever. She sees photography and painting as one in the same in terms of composition and the passion to be creative.

Veronica is also a supporter of two main major social causes that affects women and the family. The cause against domestic abuse and the fight for ending hunger & homelessness. These are issues that have affected me personally and as a survivor of domestic abuse and an overcomer, giving back is not a question. Portions of the proceeds from sales of all her art goes to support these causes.
